Subject: Re: DSCC system failures - Examples
My problems first started at around 4am yesterday when I tried to track an own client case. The person I spoke to took an age to provide basic information, and I immediately got the sense that she must have been a new recruit, as the level
of incompetence was shocking.
I didn’t realise there had been a change of contract handler and that this was just the beginning of my DSCC hellish experience.
I was on duty for Haringey from 7am.
Having received the initial notification of the problems from the LSSCA just before midday, I decided to call the DSCC to check if I had missed any calls. I couldn’t get through. But as luck (telepathic powers) would have it, as I was about
to call again, I received my first call from the DSCC at around 12.30pm, notifying me of two cases which had been logged with them by the police from around 9am. They said the delay was caused by system failures and that there was a backlog that was fast being
cleared - apparently they had nearly caught up. *side-eye*
Thereafter, I periodically rang the DSCC to check if there were any other cases, and, when I actually managed to speak to someone, I was repeatedly informed there was nothing outstanding. I didn’t receive any further calls for the remainder
of my duty. However, as the 3pm end time of my slot drew near, I decided to make one last call - “No, nothing, Ms Puri.” “Are you SURE?” “Yes, I’m certain.”
So, at 3.45pm, I was surprised to receive a call directly from an OIC regarding a duty case that I had never been notified of.
The only reason I received the call was because the duty solicitor whose slot followed mine, had been honourable enough to acknowledge that the case belonged to my slot and not theirs. They informed the OIC and I was duly contacted.
Well, you can imagine, I got straight on to the DSCC again to enquire “ARE YOU SURE THERE ARE NO OTHER CASES?!” “Yes, Ms, nothing.” “No, sorry, can you do a thorough check, I’m afraid I have no confidence at all in what you’re telling
me?” “Er, hold on a moment, I will just check another screen. [I then overheard the following exchange - “John, how do I check for so-and-so? You press, there, then there...”] “Ahem, Ms Puri, in fact there is another case for you. It was logged around
11am, here are the details...” “...*@!#%... Can I have the reference numbers for this and the previous case the OIC informed me of?” “I’m
sorry, I can’t give you those yet, but I will send them in a text”. I waited sometime for the text, it was never forthcoming, so I had to call through again to obtain the refs manually.
I attended the police station and informed custody of all matters I was dealing with. However, I was surprised to find some time later when dealing with one of the matters, that another duty solicitor was in consultation with one of my
other clients!
Yes, they had been notified by the DSCC that MY case, was actually their case and they had been issued with their own reference number?!!
Again, most graciously, accepting that this was not their case, the duty solicitor stepped aside.
Had it not been for the noble actions of Needham Poulier and Co, I would have lost out on at least two cases. Who knows, however, if there were any more...
Someone, please think of a more apt definition for the DSCC acronym.

That makes sense. I spoke to Dscc just to check that they had me on duty and it took them 13 minutes to find the correct rota and confirm.

Dear Members,
The LAA has asked for the DSCC references (or temporary references!) of any examples we have of the DSCC serious failings over the last few days.
In particular, the references of any cases where the detainee turned out not to be at the police station specified, cases where the detainee was processed before the solicitor eventually called and any where you have been asked to act without a DSCC reference at the time would be very useful.
The more real examples we can throw at them the better.
If you are willing to share these references, please email Kerry Hudson at khudson@bullivantlaw.com before end of business on Monday as we understand a meeting has been arranged with the LAA on Tuesday.

Dear Members,
We are aware of the ongoing problems with the DSCC. We have contacted the LAA and The Law Society seeking further guidance as to how to proceed whilst the issues are ongoing.
In the meantime, we suggest you take steps to contact those police stations covered by your scheduled slots directly to notify them you are the Duty and provide a direct contact number. If the police are unable to get through to obtain a DSCC reference number and deploy you directly, or the DSCC are unable to provide you with a number, please email dscc.enquiries@teamhgs.com to request a reference number and keep clear records of any problems arising. It is perhaps advisable to obtain the section of the custody record which records the client nominating your firm or requesting the duty solicitor, just in case the LAA query it.
We would also suggest you email your LAA Contract Manager with any specific case difficulties so there is a clear record when it comes to billing.
Kind regards,
