Hi Jonathan

Is it worth asking LAA to show us the document from the relevant court explaining exactly what YOUTH COURT AT HIGHBURY is moaning about. This is because LAA have said that this consultation has been as a result of the Court stating that the duty scheme is over staffed.

Are we not entitled to see exactly how this observation or complaint is worded. Without this it seems to me that a rather draconian measure is being rolled out to the detriment of Youth clients.

It seems strange and coincidental that all the courts are making this observation, however,we don't know what they are saying?

How can this be a fair consultation without us seeing this document?

Can we please say this?

Best Regards

Dear Members

Those on Highbury court and inner London court schemes will have received this .

The deadline is today .

Please do respond .

It is clear they are trying to reduce the number of “redundant “ duty solicitors at court based on the data showing hours spent at court vs numbers attended .

The problem with their proposal to merge the schemes would further remove the spirit of the schemes which were set up to ensure that defendants were matched with local firms .

Since the closures of the various courts , the HCYC rota includes firms from as far out as Enfield . The inner London scheme includes firms from West and South West London .

Merging the schemes would lead to a young person living in Enfield being represented by a firm in Wandsworth and vice versa .

They have made the savings from court closures , which has led to this consolidation  . Appropriate allocation of duty solicitor to client is a small cost in that context and that is why they need a duty solicitor for each scheme to be present each day .

Regards

Jon
