I email; ed the court manager here at Wimbledon this week about the lack of any notices and soap ion the women’s bathroom.  This was their response.

Thank you for your email and for your concern regarding London Magistrates’ Courts. I am sorry that you experienced the issues you highlight in your email – specifically low soap in the bathrooms and a lack of public notices. I have asked the Operations Manager who you emailed to look into this urgently and I am confident that this has been addressed. HMCTS is following Gov.uk advice on containing Covid-19. For more information on how HMCTS is reacting to the virus then please consult the gov.uk page on “Advice for Employers” last updated yesterday. I have audited all bathrooms in London region and am confident that we have sufficient supplies of soap, and public information posters have been displayed at all courts – and I have personally seen these at several courts across the region. Where we have sufficient supplies of soap and handwashing facilities the current advice is that additional hand sanitisers are unnecessary and for areas where handwashing facilities are unavailable. However, we will of course react to any change in Government advice.

They should of course install hand santiser dispensers, but they should also make sure that they are refilled frequently - there are some at HMP Belmarsh for example that have been empty for longer that’s they have been in use !

HMCTS has kindly agreed to now 'allow' hand sanitiser to be brought into courts, subject to using it first to prove it is not acid or anything!
Given that criminal courts are probably one of the highest risk public buildings, shouldn't they, as a matter of urgency, install hand sanitiser dispensers in all courts at various points, like in hospitals and many other public buildings, or does this omission just show the contempt had for court users?

As people are doing already we all need to be publicly shaming them with pictures of the filthy unsanitary conditions in every court.  They can’t  just defer this by side tracking repairs into a repairs list,  these are public health concerns now ( if they weren’t always !)

Well said everyone

I see the LAA guidelines particularly inhumane as nowhere in their priorities is there any concept of health of lawyers, defendants, staff, families.
Which we should note in any professional doc we can all sign up to re effect on costs

I think the Law Society and the professional bodies need to ask the MOJ urgently for a resilience package to cope with the inevitable disruption which will have a knock on effect for the next year or so

  1. the long mooted reversal of the 8.75% cut
  2. Relaxation of 14 hour and supervision requirements for the next 3 months with an expectation that this period will be extended if necessary
  3. Preferred treatment for low interest loans for firms/law centres with legal aid contracts from the British Business Bank ( treating legal aid provision as the public service it is )

Others will no doubt add to this essential resilience list

We face catastrophe when jury trials are halted/rescheduled , custody suites close , arrests fall even further .A precipitate fall in activity needs an emergency response .I suggest a guarantee by the MoJ to sustain payments at the last 12 month average with provision to allow a very long rebalancing and indeed write offs .It will be the only way to keep a cjs defence infrastructure intact .

That advice is as useful as a cat flap in an elephant house.

No mention by the LAA about how to deal with the requirements for 14 fee-earning hours per week, number of cases etc.  I bet that they have proper guidance for their staff.
