Good morning,

I have two clients in Pentonville. I have had some success (luck) in obtaining in-person and video visits to both.

In-person visits can be of limited utility even when available:

·       They appear to be limited to 0930-1100.

·       They take place in the social visits hall, not in private rooms. This can have obvious limitations on what clients are willing to discuss!

·       You cannot take papers in, only laptops.

·       Officers enforce – to varying degrees – the distance between client and legal representative, which means showing your client material on your screen is often impossible.

·       Legal visits do not seem (I have to hand in my non-smart watch) to start on time.

·       From the clock on the wall, legal visits always finish early.

To prepare for their trials, I resorted in asking for the clients to be produced at Court so I could take instructions there.

Video visits are difficult to obtain, often booked many weeks in advance. They can also be of limited utility when trying to take instructions on documents, footage, audio.

That said, on my most recent video visit, I used a function to ‘present’ documents to my client on screen. I assume this is (now) available for all video visits, not just Pentonville. It was very useful. I don’t know if it works for footage / audio. I haven’t tried.

Both clients have reported recently that the video-visit facility at Pentonville has been improved, so perhaps that bodes well moving forwards.

In case anyone needs it, the email address for video visits is: Video Link Booking, HMPPS VideoLinkBooking.HMPPS@justice.gov.uk. Please don’t all email them at once.

Regards,

Jacob
