Can I just reiterate the importance of the conference next Friday where there will be plenty of scope to ventilate this issue on a national level .

Agree with comments here.

Raises problem for criminal defence as a whole. As Raj says harder to instruct junior bar. This impacts on  overall quality of defence, also raises the question where will future leading counsel come from. All means further likelihood of miscarriages of justice.

The vote is unclear but if the bar vote no think we should come together to organise a more obvious immediate show of support I.e. a day of action etc.

The effects of the bar action are incredibly difficult for us, as solicitors in the short term

But the real question is whether 15% is going to stop the exodus / and I really fear that it will not ;

We were finding it increasingly  difficult to brief the junior bar as availability is so limited

If the Bar accept this , (In the face of what appears to be opposition from the junior end), there will be no further action for a generation and the exodus will accelerate . Whatever re ire is in place, there will be limited further increases particularly with a new austerity agenda on the horizon

In those circumstances, I reluctantly think they should continue and we should support

I agree that a 25% rise is a bridge too far at this point in time, but is probably achievable at some later date.

Dear all

I am interested in people’s views if the bar vote to reject their deal. Hopefully this exchange can be conducted in a measured friendly way as a no vote will affect us all.

At the recent CBA meeting little or no mention was made of the effect on solicitors and clients of a no vote.

My understanding of the sticking points in the deal are a) no 25per cent rise and b) the nature of the body set up re future review of payments ie they wanted an independent review board for pay.

My own view is a) is unrealistic and b) is worth fighting for.

Others may have different views. I am concerned though of the effect on our firms of the continuing action. Even if we all said we were not going to support the action I doubt we could cover all crown court work between us but we are more than a bit part in this action and I am interested in the views of others.

Thanks

Paul
