My daughter’s drama homework warns of the email which can be misunderstood as it cannot get across body movement, gesture etc…
That said I think it would be naïve to think that Michael Gove has inadvertently denied representation to the LCCSA, and the CLSA, and that he has inadvertently ended up with a bias towards barristers and fraud lawyers. Anymore than he inadvertently ignored the National Union of Teachers in bringing in a curriculum obsessed with kings and queens, endless tests and other ‘reforms’ which make the teachers (and children) I know worn out and miserable.
Kind as Victoria’s offer is I think it is vital that the LCCSA write to Gove and say that we are extremely worried/appalled whatever, that there this is not a representative body and will therefore fail to address the problems properly that are going on in police stations and courts for our clients with endless delays, lack of disclosure etc. The sort of work the LCCSA committee has been doing very well recently in monitoring re ptph etc needs to be included within this panel by those experienced and involved in it.
In the wake of what we have learnt the police did at Hillsborourgh, Stephen Lawrence etc there has never been a clearer time to ensure decent representation.

In relation to ‘London representative’, do you mean on the current team?
Our firm is central London and we are heavily involved in Crown Court and legal aid trials.
I am a qualified non-practicing barrister, practicing as a chartered legal executive, working in-house at a leading firm of solicitors and I am also an LCCSA member.
Perhaps it would be helpful for us all to circulate a list of qualification, including where we are based/ practice circuits and practice areas so we can see for ourselves if the group is fairly constituted? And if not, invite others to the group?

Morning all,
I rarely get involved in what I describe as ‘general electronic debates/discussion’ nevertheless I do so this time for some strange reason!!
I concur with the views expressed since last night.
· I consider the suggestion to engage with Gary Bell is sensible and suggest that in doing so we should acknowledge with him ‘up-front’ any legitimate concerns there may be about previously expressed views and seek an assurance from him that his past record/reputation will not be the foundation for his future work.
· With regards to the ‘unknown’ solicitor representatives what about LCCSA approaching them direct to find out about there past record in LA work.
· I have concern that there is no London representative on this group……does this reflect a possible marginalisation / disregard by the group for the London perspective and for LCCSA? I don’t doubt that there can be a valuable in-put by colleagues from the ‘Shires’ however there is a different feel when you attend these courts where there often appears to be more of a ‘club-like’ atmosphere ……perhaps that is their experience when they come to the London courts.
· Would it be an idea for the LCCSA to make a direct approach to Gary Bell for him to invite the LCCSA to nominate at least one person for the group although I suspect this may have already been done.
Anyway there are my few ‘off-the-cuff’ comments having read the contributions to date.
