Subject: FAO: Jonathan - Channel 5 Documentary

Hi Jonathan,

I hope you don’t mind me getting in touch, I was given your contact details from reception who suggested to get in contact. I’m an Assistant Producer at an Independent Television company called Alaska TV and we are making a programme for Channel 5 about Brits that have been detained abroad.

The programme, very simply, will feature individuals speaking directly to camera and in one interview tell us about their experiences of being detained abroad, whilst on holiday/on a trip.  We are looking at cases by which people have unwittingly fallen foul of local laws (such as showing affection in Dubai) or perhaps where drunken high jinx has landed them in trouble and they’ve ended upon prison for the night or longer.  We are also looking at cases where individuals have been imprisoned through no fault of their own.

We will include minor misdemeanours as well as the bigger more ‘serious’ drug cases.  In each case we want the detainee to have been freed, back on British soil and with no ongoing proceedings.  That said, if a detainee is about to fly back into the country then we would also consider that.

In terms of the filming commitment, we are looking for participants to be interviewed for a half day here in London.  At a later date we will film dramatic reconstructions of their story but we will not need them for this.

We are at the beginning of the research stages and are looking for stories and I thought there may have been people you’ve previously helped (particular drug mule offences),  who would be interested in sharing their experiences?  Would you be able to reach out to those people on our behalf?  Please feel free to circulate my contact details among interested parties.

I look forward to hearing back.

Kind regards,

Bianca Clayton
