Dear Members,
Please see below information about an event which is self-explanatory (once you get through the jargon)
As you may know, members of the committee attend many meetings organised by outside bodies, but as the pace of change increases the frequency and length of these meetings increases.
Sometimes the LCCSA throw open invites such as the one below to the wider membership- partly because we need the help, but also to keep members involved, particularly if the topic is one of special interest to a member (in this case, Youth Court)
The Association have somebody attending on the 6th, and seek a volunteer for the 7th Feb. Please Email me direct if you are interested and available in helping with this one.

Subject: Youth Inception Event 6th & 7th February 2018

Please note: This is the calendar invite for the Youth Inception event taking place on the 6th and 7th February 2018

Dear All,

As many of you know, we have recently kicked off our detailed design work for the Crime Service Model - the design of the criminal courts of the future under HMCTS Reform.

The first step is to run a series of “inception events” – for those of you who haven’t been to one of these before, these are sessions involving users of the system focused on identifying their needs and setting out how we will meet those needs in a reformed service. For the criminal courts, we want to capture and make central to the future service insight and experience from victims, witnesses, defendants, judges & magistrates, legal professionals, criminal justice agencies, and operational experts.

To try to do this for the entirety of a criminal case would not be manageable, which is why we’re approaching the newly designed Crime Service in parts. We are already transforming the way we handle Single Justice cases, design for introducing Virtual Remand Hearings and Case progression are underway and will be doing same for Online Plea and Allocation and In-Court Hearing.

As we are keen to understand the specific requirements of youths in our new Crime Service Model, we are holding a dedicated Youth Inception event. At this event, we will be looking at identifying among other things;

  • Youth safe guarding requirements along touch points with the Criminal Justice System
  • Identifying the implication of the wider Criminal Justice Reform and the New Crime Service Model on Young People with the goal of ensuring we build in safeguards that assures the welfare of young people
  • Reviewing recommendations as adopted by the government in relation to the various independent reports (Charlie Taylor and Lammy Report among others) and to understand how these might relate to our Crime Service Design.

Key to our approach is a focus on user requirements, which is why your participation will be valuable.  We will also be seeking to identify through the event areas where user research with young people will be required, and potential mechanisms for facilitating this.

As many of you also know, we had planned to hold this event earlier in 2017, but were unable to proceed for various reasons.  This event will now take place over two days – from Tuesday 6th to Wednesday 7th February 2018. It would be great if you (or a representative from your organisation) can attend for the full 2 days, but we do appreciate that this is a significant ask. We are therefore very happy if you would like to share the commitment amongst colleagues and/or attend for a specific part of the event. We are aiming to get a detailed agenda out to you very shortly, to help you make that decision.  Please bear in mind that due to the range and number of participants we are hoping to involve, it won’t be possible to accommodate more than two people per organisation.  If you are not the right person, or you think there are others we should invite, please do let us know.

The inception event location, exact venue and timings will follow shortly.

If you would like to attend, or have any questions about the organisation of the event, please contact Ola Adekoya, Project Manager for Youth Project (ola.adekoya@justice.gov.uk).

This is the beginning of the design process and the start of our conversation with you. There’s lots to do, we’re keen to get started and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the event.  Thank you in advance for helping us make this inception event a success.

Kind regards,

Ola Adekoya
